Why use a professional photographer for your senior pictures? | Gilbert, Arizona Photographer

“To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event.”   Henri Cartier-Bresson

Put down your iPhone. It’s ok, go ahead. I know it’s scary, but it’ll be all right. You know what you should do? Use a professional photographer for the important events and times throughout life. Getting senior pictures is an important event. I know your uncle Bob or your “soccer mom” neighbor has a good camera and photography may be a serious hobby of theirs, but there are many great reasons to go with the professional.

For one, a good camera doesn’t mean a good photographer. So many people have a really good DSLR but don’t know how to use it. They put it on auto and let the camera do all the work. Then when they get a really great shot, they don’t know how they achieved the shot so therefore, they can’t recreate it. For instance, how to get the background soft and the subject crisp and sharp so the subject is the focus not the background. Lamar Studios photographers possess the technical skills to give you a great image, time after time.

An artistic eye is essential to creating a beautiful image. Along with being trained in the technical aspects of photography, our professionals have experience posing a subject so they don’t “seem posed” while creating an image that’s flattering and relaxed.

Knowing how to make you look your best is also our goal. One way to do that is putting our subjects at ease. At Lamar Studios, we like to ask questions and get to know the seniors we’re photographing. Where are you thinking of going to college? Do you know what you want to study? Oh, you’re in sports, how do you think the team will do this year? All of this talking and conversation helps people relax and not think too much about the fact that they’re getting their picture taken. We also work with an assistant to help with the details. Catching hairs out of place or a flipped collar is so important. Our senior clients can feel confident that we care about the details as much as they do. Mom and dad can sit back and relax and enjoy the shoot without the need to do any thing but smile and wave.

When using Lamar Studios, you’re getting creativity and expertise and consistency. We provide beautiful images, retouching services, prints or digital files if you choose, all in a timely and professional manner. Great photography is an investment to be sure. But those amazing senior photos will be artwork to be enjoyed for years to come. So why not put your best foot forward. Why risk such an important rite of passage to a well-meaning amateur? Isn’t it worth using a professional photographer to capture such an important time in life?

Senior Style | High School Photography

Senior year is a very important time in a teenager’s life.  It’s a year full of hard work, dances, football games, and spending time with friends.  Usually the first event that kicks it all off is getting your senior pictures taken during the summer.  This is a big milestone, because entering senior year signifies a child emerging into adulthood.  It’s the culmination of all the years of school into one big grand finale and moving onto the next adventure.

Senior pictures will be proudly displayed in the home along the other family photos and cherished childhood photographs.  They’ll be shared with friends and relatives through prints and social media. These days both seniors, and parents want something really special to capture senior year.    Expressing their unique style is our specialty.  Whether it be flare on the camera lens, a portrait of them on one of our many beautiful outdoor scenes or capturing them doing something they are passionate about, each senior image has its own unique style, just like every senior high student.

Our senior portrait session at Lamar Studios includes up to 4 outfit changes and could be potentially in 5-7 different settings.  Make sure to bring outfits and things   that express who you are!  Aside from your clothing, props are a great way to show off your personality and what your interests are.  They can also help give you something to do if you happen to be a little nervous.

We have had seniors bring everything from football and hockey gear to a cello, harp, violin, car, pickup truck, motorcycle, mountain bike, dog, cheer stuff, ballet shoes, and the list goes on!  Our goal with all of this is to try to make it look natural and not necessarily like you’re showing it off. Unless you want to show off, and we can do that too.  We want to capture something that has been a big part of your life and that you’ve put a lot of time and effort into while still making it look creative and about you.  A letter jacket doesn’t always have to be worn and a dancer doesn’t always have to be striking a pose, make it look different and new!

This is one of the most important times in a person’s life.  Seniors are  transitioning into adulthood and these may likely be the last professional pictures he or she will be taking until they decide to walk down the isle.

High School Senior Pictures! Wait, what do I wear? | Arizona Photographer

So it’s that time of year again!  High school graduation is just a few short months away and you know your grandma is going to be asking you,”Where are your senior pictures?”  Other than trying to find the time in a busy senior’s schedule to take the pictures, the hard part is trying to figure out what to wear.  Here at Lamar Studios, we have 20 years of experience photographing high school seniors and we’ve unmasked some helpful guidelines when it comes to picking out some outfits for your senior pictures.

The right clothing for your senior pictures is very important in creating the very best possible photographs. Solid colors are always a safe bet.  This is especially true when the photograph is taken outside and we do quite a few outdoor images for seniors.  Patterned clothing can draw your eye away from the subject’s face so when possible, avoid loud plaids, stripes and shirts with logos on them.

For the gals, avoid skinny strapped, sleeveless or cap sleeve tops.  Bare arms can accentuate the size of your arms.  Also, bring options!  Our session allows four outfits so think variety.  Bring something casual and something a little dressy.  Choose different colors for each outfit and accessorize accordingly.  And to ensure you look your best, make sure your clothes are clean and pressed.

If you’re ever wary about an outfit, bring it anyway.  It’s always best to have choices!

The Best Headshot Photographer….. | Gilbert, Arizona Photographer

These days, everyone has a profile picture online whether it be on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram or Twitter.  Not all of them tend to be the best angle, lighting or background though.  When you’re trying to gain business and make a good impression, your picture is the first thing clients see.

A good business headshot photographer should be able to bring out your personality while maintaining your professionalism.  You should use a professional photographer, but make sure you do your research.  Not all who claim to be a photographer are full time and it’s not their career.  You want to spend a little more for quality work and experience, this picture is important!

Each person has a unique look and style.  A good photographer should be able to get your personality to show.  Chatting during your session is okay, it helps relax you and you’ll naturally become more engaged with the camera.  Breathing is key too; taking a deep breath every so often gets you a fresh, new smile.

A good corporate headshot photographer should also be able to photograph your “best side”.  Some people have features that look better at some angles than others and the photographer should be aware of how to position you to look your best.  The photographer should also have knowledge regarding the lighting and choosing the best background to make sure you don’t look washed out or your hair or clothes don’t blend with the backdrop.  A wardrobe change part way through the session could help freshen you up as well as give you another option for your portrait.  And don’t go too heavy handed on the post production work and retouching.  Remember, your headshot should look like you now, not 15 years ago!

All that being said, relax, have a little fun, and your corporate headshot will look just like…….you!

7 reasons for a new business headshot | Arizona Photographer

Haven’t replaced your outdated business headshot in a while? Lamar Studios can help with that! At our indoor photography studio in Gilbert, we have a variety of different backdrops to suit your needs. Here are 7 reasons why it might be time to update that business headshot.

Outdated photo.

Let’s face it, hairstyles and clothing change. If you don’t look anything like you do now in your headshot, time for a new portrait!

People want someone they like and trust. With a great headshot, they feel like they know you before you’

A business headshot lets your clients know that you take your work seriously.

Along with business cards and website use, who knows, someone might ask for it to highlight you and/or your business.

Imagery rules all.

In this day and age, we’re inundated with photographs on a daily basis. Sometimes, potential clients don’t even look at a resume, just the picture!

Human resource people do check social media sites. If you have a not-so-great business headshot, that could kill your chance of obtaining a client.

Different business.

Maybe you were a personal trainer and now you’re a realtor. They have two totally different clienteles that you’ll need to cater to.

Whatever the reason, Lamar Studios can help you get the photograph you need to convey the right message while maintaining a professional yet relaxed look!

What do I wear for my Business Headshot? | Gilbert Photography

Want to make sure you look your best for your business headshot?  There are several things you can do to make sure you look professional and make a great impression.

Think about who is going to be looking at these photos.  What image are you trying to project?  Are you an attorney or realtor?  Are you a doctor or physical trainer?  While all are professionals, each may need a different look.

At Lamar Studios, we love taking business headshots!  Clothing is an important part of looking sharp and one way to do that is make sure you choose something comfortable and that fits well.  It’s always harder to relax if you’re wearing an ill-fitting ensemble!  Also, make sure it’s clean and neatly pressed.

Make sure to stay away from busy patterns and unflattering colors.  Busy patterns pull your eye away from the subject but solid colors help keep the focus on you!  Ladies, avoid cap sleeves or sleeveless tops and dresses.  They make your arms appear bigger than they truly are.

It’s always a good idea to bring 2-3 different tops in different styles.  You might like a certain color more than another or you might like something with a different neckline.  Keep the jewelry simple too, we don’t want to distract from your face. Besides, we want your eyes to be the jewelry!

You can come our studio location in Gilbert or we can come to you.

In the end, your business headshot should exemplify you. So have some fun with it!

Christmas Extravaganza | School Photography

For the past few years we have had the pleasure of photographing Valley Christian High School’s Christmas Extravaganza, a performance collaboration of choir, orchestra, drama, and dance. After having all of Valley’s seniors in our studio over the summer for senior pictures, it is fun for us to see them perform and showcase their talents. As a photographer, it is always exciting to play a part in documenting these events. These students, who have spent weeks preparing and practicing for one night’s show, will have these photographs as evidence of their hard work. Years from now they can look back and remember the relationships they built, the abilities they grew, and the audience they pleased.

Talent Captured | Senior Photography

“Ballet is an incredibly difficult, beautiful art form that takes a lot of training, a lot of time, and a lot of hard work.”~ Sutton Foster

You don’t need to be a successful Broadway performer such as Sutton Foster to experience the amount of dedication required in becoming a dancer.  Many little girls dream of becoming a ballet dancer but only some spend their entire childhood in training; missing social time with friends to practice and balancing after school classes with homework. At a very young age the dancer has to live out the values of patience necessary to rehearse the same movements over and over until their body can perform them as naturally as it breathes. This requires mental determination, to perform when the body wants to quit; sometimes resulting in temporary injury. Such valuable lessons are learned at such a young age.

When a high school senior asks us to document this talent in a photograph, it is an important request. A few photos will display an entire chapter of this person’s life. While some cute outfits may be bought at the mall a few days prior and the morning may be spent curling hair and applying make-up, the talent has been gained many years prior.

The elongated legs and elegant arms of the girl in arabesque are not only a beautiful art form but also a reflection of character and dedication. As she performs her various positions, leaps, and twirls, her smile takes on a very genuine quality. Her mother, sitting in the sidelines watching, tears up. The time spent driving her daughter to practices, purchasing costumes, and applauding at every performance reflects in her eyes. The spark speaks her pride in her daughter loudly. As a photographer, I love capturing these unique moments.
